Poker Pro Profile: Erik Seidel 0

Posted on May 11, 2012 by Tim

Erik Seidel is one of those poker pros that people never really notice. He is not nearly as famous as some of the players on the circuit even though he has had more success than most of them. He has been playing poker professional for twenty five years and he has been a very consistent performer throughout that time. The result is a career that most people would envy.

Erik Seidel got his start as a professional backgammon player in the early eighties. This was something that he was very good at but he decided that he could make more money on the stock market than he could playing backgammon so he gave up the game professionally to take a job as a stock broker. While working as a stock broker he also started to play poker at night. In 1987 when the stock market crashed Seidel lost his job so he decided to turn to poker to earn a living. This has proved to be a good decision.

Having been a professional poker player for twenty five years Erik Seidel has built a reputation as one of the most consistent players in the game. He has won eight World Series of Poker bracelets without ever becoming a well known player outside of the world of serious poker buffs. He is in fact the only player to win a bracelet in three straight years.

A big part of the reason that Erik Seidel is not a well known poker player is his low key style. Unlike a lot of players these days he does not spend a lot of time talking while at the table, he just sits quietly and plays his hand. While this may have kept him out of the limelight the approach that he has taken has worked for him with more than eight million dollars in career winnings.

In addition to his World Series of Poker wins Erik Seidel has won several other tournaments as well. In addition to his wins he has made several finals tables. In fact one of the keys to his success is that he is a very consistent money winner. He may not win every tournament that he enters but there is a pretty good chance that he will finish in the money.

When he is not playing in poker tournaments Erik Seidel spends a great deal of his time playing in cash games. He lives in Las Vegas so he has lots of opportunities to play in these. Most of the top pros have figured out that they can make a lot more money playing in cash games than they ever could playing in tournaments. Nevertheless Erik Seidel continues to make tournament play his priority, given the success that he has had it is hard to argue with this decision.

Man responsible for Poker Tournament heist in Berlin arrested 0

Posted on July 01, 2010 by Vazilevski

Another man was placed in arrest after the follow-ups made by the Berlin authorities following the March 6 heist during a poker tournament at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. The German police has Mohammed Abou-C in custody with suspicions of initiating the attack.

The 31-year old suspect was arrested a day after a warrant was issued against him. Abou-C was cornered and handcuffed while he was driving around the capital. He is the sixth suspect put behind bars linked to the poker robbery. Back in March, four individuals who participated in the raid was arrested with another individual who organized the attack was also apprehended.

According to the prosecutor holding the case, Abou-C was responsible for pointing to the other accomplices where the money was placed. It is the critical information he gave to the other robbers which somehow lead to the crime.

Despite the arrests in the past months, the police are still in the dark in trying to recover the money. Up to now, only 4,000 euros have been recovered of the missing poker prize money. Most likely, more arrests will follow so authorities can also trace if not recover where the money had gone.

Looking at the bright side, poker organizers have beefed up security in all poker tournaments. This guarantees more protection for players and another mess like the Berlin poker tournament is less likely to happen.

Tony G. and Phil Ivey do a little dance… 0

Posted on March 08, 2010 by Tim

I love Phil “The Genius” Ivey and I hate Tony G. – but this hand is played pretty superbly by Tony… IF YOU’RE A MORON.

Phil should only call this with a set, 64 or MAYBE J7.

This call is just sickness, and I think he wasn’t too proud of himself afterwards.

While poker has long been played in Australian casinos, the game seemed to take on a new meaning after the Australian Joe Hachem won the World Series of Poker Main Event in 2005. The country features numerous casinos with most of them offering at least one variety of poker with most offering more, some specialising in things like online blackjack Australia. The best known casino offering poker is Melbourne’s Crown Casino which is also the location of several major poker tournaments every year.

Two Aces for Jennifer Harman 0

Posted on February 12, 2010 by Tim

Phil Ivey might really be the best in the world. He knows Jennifer Harman‘s range, he knows his jacks might be in trouble against her pre-flop range, he awaits the board, calls the turn to catch the 2barrel and folds the river. Excellent.

Here’s a comment I fully agree with from the youtube page;

Harman/Ivey is fairly standard. she raises and cbets with AK, KQ + the obvious big pair, but he beats some of her range, and a call on the turn stops a 2 barrel and sets up river check/steal or check/value raise if she was light.
Its Howard “Prof” Lederer that amuses me. WTF is he doing calling an EP raise + a call with A rag? Not enough equity to make it profitable against a 8 handed EP range and if he thinks hes going to make up for it by outplaying those two postflop, he’s delusional.

Dario plays the players, not the chips. He plays the position, he plays the hands, he doesn’t mind the size of the pots – he just wants to take the pots down. We’ve seen that in High Stakes Poker, Dario Minieri LOVES to move those chips!

Poker Tells – How Your Opponents Can Figure Your Moves Out 0

Posted on September 15, 2009 by Tim

Poker tells form an integral part of the poker strategy as they can be used by players to discern their opponents’ frame of mind, and thus gain extra information about their card hand. This can be used to gauge whether they have a strong hand with good cards or a weak hand, whether they have any specific trump cards that may give them an edge over others and so on and so forth. Poker tells can manifest in the form of physical responses to a new hand, clues, behavioral patterns, mannerisms and characteristic gestures. There are some common rules to the manners in which people behave which can help to “read” opponents. However it is important to remember that these assumptions are not always applicable and professionals in the field often master the art of giving false signals and purposely regarding in specific ways to fool their opponents. In this article we shall discuss two of the most common poker tells.

Anxious, nervous behavior is one of the most prominent tells in poker. People become nervous when they expect a bad hand or receive a set of cards that are less than favorable. .  This is perhaps less obvious when playing in an online casino, such as online casino King Solomons for example. Anxiety at a bad hand can manifest in a number of tangible ways such as the throat becoming dry, the heart rate increasing significantly, the pupils of the eyes becoming dilated and a constant twitching of various body muscles. Many a time players react to a specific hand by responding to them in subtle, yet noticeable physical ways. If the chest expands outwards in a grand manner it is often because the player has been dealt an impressive hand yet if the chest heaves in and out it can be because the player has received cards that might compromise his or her position. The pitch of the voice too is indicative of the level of anxiety being experienced by the individual. A suddenly high-pitched voice is an indicator of increased alarm and tenseness. Many expert players often fake anxiousness to appear nervous and bothered.

Greg Raymer – aggression can backfire 0

Posted on September 15, 2009 by Tim

People WILL start playing back at you more strongly if you have a loose and hyperaggressive table image like Greg Raymer does. Be prepared to call reasonably weak, and make sure to identify the players who are smart enough to notice your play and adapt.
